Every so often a piece of storytelling lands at exactly the right moment. That's what happened when I sat down to watch the trailer for Sir David Attenborough's latest ocean documentary. It's a global film, shot across every ocean on Earth — and yet, scene for scene, it tracks almost exactly onto the last three decades of my own life with uncomfortable precision.
The Ocean's Vitality, and My Baseline for "Normal"
The film calls the ocean our planet's "life support system" — the ultimate ally we have in keeping the Earth stable. I didn't need convincing. I lived that vitality firsthand. Before the year 2000, my father had me in the water with him constantly, and I got to witness an ocean teeming with life that most people my age never saw. Reefs were thick with kelp — so thick that the fronds would brush against your leg and feel exactly like something alive had grabbed your calf.
That childhood abundance became my personal baseline. Not an abstraction from a textbook, but a memory of what the ocean is supposed to look like.
The Crisis, and My Crossroads
The film describes a planet at a "crossroads" — battered by destructive practices, coral bleaching, and ecosystems pushed to the brink. My crossroads arrived in 2021, off Little Barrier Island. I went in expecting the reefs of my childhood. Instead I found kina barrens: bare rock, stripped clean, as far as I could see.
That crisis became data a few weeks later, from an Auckland City Hospital bed, recovering from a kina spike to the thumb. Researching what I'd just seen, I learned that at current rates, New Zealand is on track to lose its kelp forests entirely within 10 to 15 years.
The Optimism, and Where Kelp Helpers Began
Despite the bleak outlook, the film's real message is one of resilience — the ocean's remarkable capacity to bounce back to life if we take collective action. That hospital bed is exactly where my own optimism took root. Instead of accepting that the rimurimu I grew up with was simply gone, I chose to act. Kelp Helpers exists because I believe those reefs can come back — and it took the same stubbornness to build a restoration movement that it took to get out of that hospital bed.
The Call to Action, and the Next 67 Years
The film closes with a challenge: save the sea, and we save our world — write the next chapter. I'm 33 this year, which gives me, as I've written about elsewhere, 67 years before my 100th birthday in 2092. The documentary asks its audience to help write that next chapter. I've already committed the rest of my life to authoring it — locally, in Aotearoa, one removed kina and one restored reef at a time.
The global message and the grassroots, local work turn out to be the same story, told at two different scales.
The Science Behind "Life Support System"
Calling the ocean a life support system isn't a metaphor — it's a description of three load-bearing jobs it does simultaneously, and each one comes with a nuance worth getting right:
- Carbon. The ocean holds roughly 90% of the Earth's actively cycling carbon — about 50 times more than the atmosphere. (The Earth's crust holds more carbon overall, but it's locked away, not cycling.) Kelp forests and phytoplankton are the engines driving that drawdown.
- Heat. The ocean absorbs roughly 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gas emissions — not 90% of the sun's total energy. Without that thermal buffer, land temperatures would already be unlivable. The ocean is, quite literally, taking the heat for the rest of the planet.
- Biodiversity. This is the structural integrity holding the other two up. Biodiverse ecosystems are more resilient to temperature shifts and disease. When rimurimu thrives, it provides the habitat and food web foundation that sustains diverse marine life — and that diversity is what lets the ocean keep sequestering carbon and buffering heat. Strip it out, and the other two jobs degrade with it.
None of these three operate in isolation — each one props up, or undermines, the other two. That's easiest to see as a cycle:
The trade-off cycle: each metric reinforces or undermines the other two. Run it in reverse — restore biodiversity — and it reinforces itself the other way. Kelp restoration is a direct intervention on the biodiversity node, which is why it has outsized leverage on the other two.
